Some fans will do anything to get closer to their idols, but Cilvaringz took his devotion to the Wu-Tang Clan to an entirely different level. The official trailer for The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable pulls back the curtain on his extraordinary journey from outsider to trusted insider, leading to one of the most unconventional music releases in history.
Directed by Academy Award-winning producer Joanna Natasegara (The White Helmets, The Edge of Democracy) in her feature directorial debut, the film follows Dutch-Moroccan rapper and producer Cilvaringz as he earns the trust of his childhood heroes, including The RZA, and helps bring an audacious musical vision to life.
That vision became Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a 31-track album housed in an ornate, handcrafted silver box. Auctioned in 2015, the album was created as a statement about music's value in an era of digital abundance, with only one copy ever intended to exist legally. Its unprecedented scarcity ignited a global debate about art, ownership, technology and who gets to decide the worth of music.
More than a story about an album that challenged the music industry, The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable explores the ambition, loyalty and personal sacrifices behind an outsider's determination to belong.
Produced by Abigail Anketell-Jones, Lauren Dark and Vanessa Kirby, the film features executive producers The RZA, Joe Gebbia, Jason Ropell, Abazar Khayami, David Kimbangi, Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Trevor Burgess, Gary Hess and James Costa.
The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable premieres October 16 exclusively on Netflix.
