Tyler Perry is putting survival, love, trauma and second chances under the microscope with his new film Doing Life, a gripping drama about two people who meet under the worst circumstances and discover an unexpected reason to keep fighting.

What happens when the man who once saved your life walks out of prison and asks for a chance to become part of it? Tyler Perry is taking audiences into dangerous and deeply emotional territory with Doing Life, a gripping new drama about survival, unlikely love and the complicated price of a second chance.
Written and directed by Perry, the film stars Naomi Baker, Jay Reeves and Tamberla Perry, with Baker playing Anika, a former corrections officer and single mother whose life takes a terrifying turn during a violent riot at Hollow Correctional.
In the middle of the chaos, an inmate named Carousel (Reeves) puts his own life on the line to save Anika and her baby. What begins as a life-or-death encounter eventually becomes something neither of them could have expected.
Months after the riot, Anika and Carousel begin corresponding as pen pals. Still behind bars, Carousel takes control of his future, teaching himself the law and ultimately finding a way out of prison. Once he's free, he goes looking for the woman whose life he once saved, determined to find out if their connection can become something more.
But Anika's family isn't ready to welcome him with open arms. To them, Carousel is still a man with a troubling past, and they aren't convinced that his intentions are genuine. As their doubts grow, Anika finds herself caught between the people who want to protect her and a man insisting that he has changed.
Just when Carousel's past threatens to define him, another side of his story begins to emerge. He's a gifted painter, revealing a creative and vulnerable side that Anika—and her family—may not have seen coming.
With love, family pressure and unresolved trauma at stake, Doing Life explores what it really means to earn a second chance—and whether two people who have survived very different battles can build something lasting together.
Doing Life is streaming now on Netflix.
