Powerful new documentary explores the legacy, music, and enduring message of one of the most influential bands in history

HBO has announced the debut of the HBO Original documentary EARTH, WIND & FIRE (TO BE CELESTIAL VS. THAT’S THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD), produced and directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. The highly anticipated documentary premieres Sunday, June 7, from 9:00–11:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
From the visionary filmmaker behind the acclaimed documentary Summer of Soul comes a deeply personal and expansive exploration of the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire, the iconic group whose sound and message have transcended generations and reshaped music history.
The documentary traces the extraordinary journey of the nine-time Grammy Award-winning band through the vision and leadership of late founder Maurice White. Through an intimate lens, Questlove examines the band's origins, creative evolution, triumphs and challenges while showcasing the lasting impact of their artistry from the 1970s to today.
More than a celebration of chart-topping success, EARTH, WIND & FIRE (TO BE CELESTIAL VS. THAT’S THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD) delves into the deeper philosophical and spiritual foundations that defined the group’s identity and music. Their themes of unity, positivity, self-discovery, and transcendence became as significant as the unforgettable melodies and electrifying performances that made them cultural icons.
Featured Participants are band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson are joined by musicians, managers, authors, former band members, and family members, as well as notables the band has influenced, including President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, H.E.R., and Flea.
