HBO’s Emmy®-nominated period drama returns November 1, and New York’s elite may be in for their most turbulent season yet.

HBO’s The Gilded Age is heading back to New York’s most exclusive drawing rooms, but the closer these families get to the lives they want, the more complicated things seem to become. HBO has released the official trailer for Season 4 of the Emmy®-nominated drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, and there’s plenty of trouble brewing behind those beautiful gowns and perfectly polished smiles.

Watch the official trailer below.

Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) knows what it takes to get ahead in society, but has her determination to reach the top come at the expense of her own family? The new trailer hints at more tension between Bertha and her husband, George (Morgan Spector), and their marriage could be facing one of its toughest tests yet. Bertha has spent years making sure the right doors open for her, but now she may have to confront what those victories have cost her at home.

Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) isn't ready to fade into the background. With an opportunity to reclaim her standing, Agnes has a reason to get back into the game. She and Bertha have never exactly seen eye to eye, so the prospect of these two formidable women fighting for their place in New York society should make for some delicious drama.

While the older generation battles over status and influence, Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) is trying to figure out what comes next. She wants to build a life on her own terms, but independence isn't always easy in a world where everyone seems to have an opinion about how a woman should live. Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) has her own challenge ahead as she works to win over her future in-laws. As she prepares for marriage, she'll have to navigate expectations that could complicate both her personal life and her ambitions as a writer.

Everyone wants something, whether it’s acceptance, independence, love, or a little more power, but getting it rarely comes without a few sacrifices.

Season 4 brings back the ensemble cast led by Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, and Audra McDonald. With eight episodes ahead, there's plenty of room for relationships to unravel, old rivalries to flare up, and unexpected alliances to change the social landscape.

The Gilded Age Season 4 premieres Sunday, November 1, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with episodes also available to stream on HBO Max.
