If you’re looking for a crime drama that delivers old school New York grit, dangerous power plays and plenty of attitude, MGM+’s The Westies is definitely one to have on your radar. The gritty crime drama is heading toward its Season 1 finale on August 23, making now the perfect time to catch up on the series before the seaosn finale.

Set in early 1980s Hell’s Kitchen, The Westies drops viewers into the violent world of New York’s notorious Irish gang. This isn't exactly the New York of postcards and tourist brochures. This is a rougher, tougher Hell’s Kitchen, where loyalty can be bought and alliances fall apart.

The series follows Westies kingpin Eamon Sweeney, played by J.K. Simmons, and Simmons is having a great time with the role. You believe this is a man who has spent years building his reputation and isn't about to let younger members of his organization come along and take everything away from him.

But that's exactly where the trouble begins. The Westies are facing a generational shift, with younger members looking at the streets, and the opportunities in front of them, very differently. The massive construction project surrounding the Javits Center puts serious money on the table, and everyone wants a piece of it.

Of course, where there’s big money, there’s going to be conflict. The Westies' uneasy relationship with the Italian Mafia becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as tensions rise, and suddenly Sweeney has to worry about more than just keeping his own crew in line. The Mafia is watching, the younger Westies are getting restless and the FBI is getting closer, which leads to Birdie Polk, played by Jessica Frances Dukes, who adds another fascinating dimension to the story. Birdie is a special agent leading the FBI's Gambino Task Force, putting her in a position to investigate the very criminal network that has managed to operate in the shadows for so long.

Titus Welliver is also fantastic as Glenn Keenan, a compromised NYPD officer with deep ties to the Westies. Welliver is particularly good at playing characters who exist in that gray area, and Keenan fits right into that world.

His character is caught between law enforcement and the neighborhood he knows, creating some of the show's most interesting tension. With Birdie's investigation moving forward, Keenan finds himself in an increasingly difficult position, and you can't help but wonder just how long he can keep playing both sides.

But the performances are only part of what makes The Westies work. The show's 1980s Hell's Kitchen setting is fantastic. You can almost feel the tension hanging over the neighborhood in the gritty streets of New York. The Westies doesn't spend forever getting to the point. There’s always another deal, confrontation, betrayal or questionable decision waiting around the corner. That makes the series a lot of fun to watch. The Westies doesn't forget that crime dramas can also be entertaining. There’s a swagger to the series that makes it easy to settle in for another episode.

The real hook is watching all these competing forces collide. You have Sweeney trying to hold onto his power, younger Westies looking toward the future, the Mafia protecting its interests, Keenan caught between worlds and Birdie Polk steadily tightening the FBI's grip. Nobody is exactly operating from a position of comfort, and with the Season 1 finale coming on August 23, all of those storylines are heading towards an explosive payoff.

The Westies is streaming now on MGM+.
