Lamar Odom. A promising two-time NBA champion whose talent got swept away by alcohol and substance abuse.

If you were following the NBA in the late 2000s or early 2010s, you definitely knew the name Lamar Odom - and not just for his basketball skills. When people talk about Odom, the conversation often goes beyond the court. His life story includes very public struggles with addiction, repeated setbacks in recovery, and brushes with the law that made him the butt of jokes and social media memes. His journey is one of the most complicated in modern sports culture, raising the question of whether his career was overshadowed or defined by everything that happened off the court.

Odom's story began in Queens, New York, where he grew up facing serious adversity, including the loss of his mother at a young age. Basketball was his escape, and it became his refuge. He achieved great success with the Los Angeles Lakers, playing alongside legends like Kobe Bryant.

His fame skyrocketed when he married Khloé Kardashian in 2009, marking his transition into reality TV and cementing his status as a celebrity. He became one of the first athletes to fully cross into reality TV celebrity culture, blending sports and entertainment by making frequent guest appearances on the reality shows Keeping Up with the Kardashians and his very own show, Khloé & Lamar.

Behind the fame, Odom's personal demons were on the rise, substance abuse, personal loss with the death of his infant son, and a plethora of legal and relationship issues. Odom has been open about his long battle with drug addiction, particularly cocaine, revealing in interviews that substance use started early in his NBA career and escalated as he dealt with fame and pressure being in the constant spotlight. At the height of his career, much of this was hidden. But behind the scenes, addiction was taking its toll.

Everything came to a head in 2015 when Odom was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel after a drug overdose, suffering a near fatal overdose that left him in a coma. He suffered twelve strokes and six heart attacks.

Since retiring, Odom's journey has been characterized by a mix of recovery setbacks and reality TV appearances, including the new shocking 90 minute documentary, The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, that exposes those challenges. In a brutally honest moment, Odom reveals in the documentary, "I'm already Lamar Odom, and I'm just watching how she lives and their lifestyle. I'm like, I know this is where I wanna be. Like, this is how I wanna live." Directed by Ryan Duffy, the doc features raw interviews with Odom, Khloé Kardashian, and those close to him, revealing how addiction influenced his choices and relationships. It offers an unfiltered look at his continued struggle for sobriety, presenting his battle as an ongoing cycle rather than a neat narrative of redemption.

Per the official synopsis, through never before heard revelations and firsthand accounts, the documentary peels back the public narrative to expose the private struggles, hidden pressures, and pivotal decisions throughout Lamar's life that led to that moment. Featuring candid interviews with Lamar Odom, Khloé Kardashian, and the former manager of the Love Ranch, the film revisits the infamous night that nearly cost Lamar his life.

Odom, now 46, continues his sobriety one day at a time. The documentary humanizes Odom, whom many people only knew through headlines. In many ways, the raw, ongoing battle is what should make people keep rooting for him, not just as a former NBA champion, but as someone still fighting to rebuild his life.

The Death & Life of Lamar Odom is streaming now on Netflix.
