Season 5 of "The Chosen," Prime Video's multi-season historical series that explores the biblical life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of those who met him, returned exclusively on the streamer on June 14. This season kicked off with the release of two episodes, following a successful theatrical run that grossed $140 million and was watched by an estimated 280 million people globally. The next batch of episodes will be released in threes, with episodes 3, 4, and 5 released on June 22, with the remaining three episodes released on June 29.

The series, created, directed, and written by Dallas Jenkins, stars Jonathan Roumie as the titular character. Initially crowdfunded, it first premiered in 2017 before expanding it's reach on various platforms. The series later secured an exclusive deal with Amazon MGM Studios to release Seasons 5, 6, and 7 in theaters, followed by a 90-day exclusive window on Prime Video. "The Chosen" has resonated deeply with both religious and non-religious viewers due to its moving portrayals of biblical leaders and the faith-based stories chronicled in the Bible.

While Jesus continues his close relationships with those closest to him, the fifth season is grander in scale, and the stakes are higher, as the official synopsis reveals that the people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But instead of confronting Rome—he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power is threatened, and the country's religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus' last.

Season 5 is the best season to date, focusing on The Last Supper. Artfully and sensitively written and paying homage to the source material of the Old Testament, it's easy to see why the series has been a global hit as the series brings significant pieces of scripture to life, taking viewers on a faith-themed ride with an updated take on well known beloved - and not so beloved - characters. While there are many adaptations of Jesus' life, few have achieved the impact of "The Chosen" raising meaningful questions and continuing the timeless biblical discussions long after the end credits roll.

The first two episodes of Season 5 are currently available on Prime Video.
