Lifetime’s Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story brings the deeply personal story of acclaimed writer and cultural critic Roxane Gay to the screen, delivering an emotional drama about trauma, survival, identity, and ultimately finding the strength to reclaim your voice.
Based on Gay’s memoir Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, the film takes viewers back to when Roxane was just 12 years old. She moves with her family to what appears to be an ideal suburban community, only for her life to be forever changed by a devastating act of sexual violence. From there, the story explores the long shadow that trauma casts over her life and the complicated ways she learns to cope with what happened.
But Surviving the Silence isn't simply a story about what happened to Roxane. It is about what happens after the trauma, when surviving becomes an everyday battle and finding your voice becomes part of the healing process. The film examines Roxane's relationship with food and her body while following her journey toward understanding herself, confronting the pain of her past, and refusing to let that pain define the rest of her life.
The film is particularly compelling because the woman at the center of the story isn't just the subject of the film — Roxane Gay is directly involved in telling it. Gay wrote the screenplay, serves as an executive producer, and narrates the movie, giving the production an unusually personal connection to the story being portrayed. Asia Youngman directs, while Hilda Martin portrays young Roxane and Sunnii E. Bartee plays adult Roxane.
This isn't a conventional Lifetime thriller built around shocking twists. Instead, the emotional tension comes from watching a young girl attempt to make sense of something that should never have happened to her and seeing how that experience follows her into adulthood.
