Apple TV’s acclaimed espionage drama Slow Horses returns for its highly anticipated sixth season on September 16, bringing Gary Oldman’s unforgettable Jackson Lamb and the unconventional MI5 agents of Slough House back into the middle of another dangerous game of secrets, revenge and international intrigue. With six new episodes rolling out weekly through October 21, the series once again proves that when everything goes wrong, sometimes the agents nobody wants are the ones you need most.
Based on Mick Herron’s acclaimed Slough House novels, Slow Horses has built its reputation by taking the traditional spy thriller and turning it sideways. These aren't polished super spies operating from glamorous locations, they are MI5 agents who have been pushed aside after career-ending mistakes and dumped into Slough House, where they work under the perpetually irritated, brilliantly unpredictable Jackson Lamb. Season six raises the stakes considerably when the Slow Horses find themselves on the run as Diana Taverner becomes entangled in a dangerous cycle of retaliation and revenge.
If Lamb thought keeping his team under control was difficult before, this latest crisis is about to make his job considerably harder. The new season draws from Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh novels in Herron’s book series, bringing together personal conflicts and a larger espionage threat that puts the team in an increasingly precarious position.
The series continues to follow Gary Oldman, once again giving viewers the wonderfully abrasive Jackson Lamb we've come to expect. Lamb may look like the last person you'd want leading an intelligence operation, but beneath the sarcasm, messy appearance and constant irritation is a formidable MI5 operative with an unmistakable loyalty to the people under his command. Oldman’s Lamb remains one of the show's biggest draws, and his complicated relationship with the Slow Horses continues to give the series its unique mix of dark humor and genuine emotional weight.
Jack Lowden also returns as River Cartwright, whose journey continues to become increasingly complicated as the danger surrounding Slough House closes in. The returning ensemble includes Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley and Tom Brooke, while Hugo Weaving joins the season as Frank Harkness. Lenny Rush is also among the new additions, and Olivia Cooke returns as Sidonie “Sid” Baker.
What makes Slow Horses so much fun is that the series never needs to turn its characters into conventional action heroes to make the danger feel real. The Slough House crew remain flawed, unpredictable and occasionally their own worst enemies, but they have repeatedly demonstrated that their unconventional approach can uncover threats that others overlook. Season six puts that dynamic under even greater pressure as the team faces assassins, personal vendettas and a conspiracy that reaches far beyond the walls of Slough House.
The sixth season also marks another chapter in the show's evolution behind the scenes, with Gaby Chiappe adapting the season for television and Adam Randall returning to direct. The series continues to balance its espionage thrills with the dry humor and complicated relationshops that have become essential parts of its identity.
Season six premieres Wednesday, September 16, with new episodes arriving weekly through October 21.
