Leon Simmons has come a long way since audiences first met him in FX’s Snowfall, but as Isaiah John returns to the role in Hulu’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, leaving the past behind is proving to be easier said than done. With the spinoff exploring a new chapter in the franchise’s story, Leon is searching for redemption, navigating the dangers of a changing Los Angeles, and trying to build a future with Wanda, played by Gail Bean. However, the life he wants and the world surrounding him continue to pull him in opposite directions.

Ahead of the season finale, Reel Perspectives recently caught up with John to discuss his return to the beloved franchise, the evolution of Leon Simmons after three years, and what it means to revisit a character who has grown and changed alongside the actor portraying him. From his initial excitement about continuing Leon’s story to the emotional challenges of exploring the character’s next chapter, John offered insight into the love, intention, and rediscovery that have shaped his approach to the role.

When John learned that Leon’s story would continue, he admits the news brought a mix of emotions, especially as he considered how to approach the character after so much time away. Ultimately, he embraced the challenge, putting love and intention into a performance that continues to explore Leon’s complicated relationship with his past.

“I do put so much love and intention behind what we did,” John shared, explaining why he deliberately avoids putting pressure on himself over how fans will receive the series.

That care shines through in Leon’s struggle to make things right after the fallout with Franklin, his efforts to leave his old life behind, and his complicated relationship with Wanda, played by Gail Bean. As Wanda pursues her ambitions in the music industry, Leon sees familiar dangers in a world he desperately wants to escape. And while he understands the risks, figuring out how to protect their future without getting pulled back into his past is another battle altogether.

For John, Leon’s evolution has been one of the most rewarding parts of playing the character. From his days in Snowfall to his new chapter in The Drop, Leon is constantly rediscovering himself, even as survival mode threatens to pull him backward.

For fans who have followed Leon from the beginning, the interview offers a closer look at the man behind the character, a deeper look at Leon’s journey, and why there is still so much to unpack as The Drop: A Snowfall Saga approaches its season finale.
