The number 13 has always carried an ominous reputation, but in the world of American Horror Story, it may be the most terrifying number of them all. FX’s legendary horror anthology returned September 24 with American Horror Story: 13, bringing together an extraordinary collection of familiar faces, unforgettable characters and supernatural chaos that reached across the franchise’s history.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the latest installment is shaping up as a massive reunion for longtime AHS fans, with some of the series’ most recognizable stars stepping back into roles that helped make the anthology a television phenomenon. The season brings together Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman and Joey Pollari, among an expansive ensemble of returning and new talent.
What makes 13 particularly intriguing is the way it reaches backward while telling a new story. Lange returns as Constance Langdon, while Paulson reprises Cordelia Goode, Peters returns to multiple characters, and familiar figures including Madison Montgomery, Marie Laveau, Queenie, Myrtle Snow and Twisty the Clown are once again part of the twisted AHS universe.
The new season follows Joey Pollari’s Ben DeSoto, a man whose fear of the number 13 becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss after a near-death experience. Ben eventually finds himself working as a hospice caregiver for a mysterious client in an eerie New York penthouse, where what initially appears to be an unusual job quickly turns into something much more sinister.
The return of Jessica Lange’s iconic Murder House character, Constance, immediately raises the stakes. Constance has never been the type to sit on the sidelines, and her involvement with Ben and his mysterious patient puts her squarely in the middle of a supernatural puzzle that seems to stretch far beyond one haunted home or one troubled family. Meanwhile, Cordelia Goode is once again dealing with forces that could threaten the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy and potentially the world itself. Sarah Paulson’s return adds another layer of emotional history to a season already packed with characters who have unfinished business.
For fans of the franchise’s darker corners, the return of Twisty the Clown is another deliciously disturbing surprise. John Carroll Lynch once again slips into the role of the Freak Show villain, proving that some nightmares never really disappear. The premiere wastes little time reminding viewers why Twisty remains one of the anthology’s most recognizable monsters.
The Season 13 ensemble also includes Emma Roberts, Jamie Brewer, Frances Conroy, Mena Suvari, John Carroll Lynch, Tig Notaro, Madelaine Petsch, John Waters and several newcomers, creating a cast that feels less like a traditional new chapter and more like a collision of American Horror Story history.
That collision is ultimately what makes American Horror Story: 13 such an intriguing return. Rather than simply introducing another isolated horror story, the season plays with the mythology that has accumulated over more than a decade. Murder House, Coven, Hotel, Freak Show, Cult, and other corners of the AHS universe suddenly feel much closer together.
Naturally, Murphy and Falchuk aren't revealing all of the secrets hiding behind that unlucky number. With 13 episodes planned for the season and the story already connecting Ben's increasingly bizarre circumstances to Cordelia's witches and familiar supernatural figures, there is plenty of room for the anthology to continue pulling unexpected characters and pieces of its mythology into the same terrifying puzzle.
For longtime viewers, American Horror Story: 13 offers the thrill of seeing beloved characters return. For newer fans, it provides an opportunity to discover why these characters became such an important part of the franchise's legacy.
American Horror Story: 13 premiered September 24 on FX, with 3 episodes available to stream on Hulu, and will release new episodes every Thursday through its season finale on October 29.
