Prime Video's rollout of dramas and psychological thrillers is gaining momentum as the streamer has been on a roll lately. Following the fantastic series "The Better Sister," starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, which debuted earlier this year, and the coming of age drama "The Summer I Turned Pretty," the streamer introduces a new guilty pleasure, "The Girlfriend."

"The Girlfriend" follows Laura Sanderson, a paranoid mother whose reaction to her son's new girlfriend forever alters their relationship. Over the course of six episodes, which premiered all at once on September 10, the show explores themes of love, greed, and power.

Produced by Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios, the series stars Robin Wright (House of Cards), who also serves as an executive producer and directed the first three episodes. It is based on Michelle Frances' 2017 novel of the same name. Laura has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel. But her perfect life unravels when Daniel brings home Cherry Laie (Olivia Cooke; House of the Dragon), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something and grows overly suspicious of Cherry's motives.

  • Anna Chancellor as Lilith

  • Francesca Corney as Millie

  • Shalom Brune-Franklin as Brigitte

The Girlfriend delivers a gripping narrative of how perception shapes reality. The series opens with a bloody confrontation between two women before taking us back five months earlier to the events leading up to that explosive moment. Initially, we are introduced to Laura's perspective, and as the story unfolds, we also gain insight into Cherry's character, who is highly ambitious and far less innocent than she seems. Adding to the suspense is Laura's overt affection for Daniel, which raises an eyebrow. Laura proves she's not above resorting to extreme measures in the escalating tension, which ultimately jeopardizes her relationships with her husband and son, as the conflict takes a deadly turn between the two women, resulting in a jaw-dropping, shocking finale.

Cooke and Wright deliver captivating, layered performances that truly simmer, making this series irresistibly immersive through hidden motives and escalating tension. With ever evolving perspectives, the series provides one of the juiciest pleasures that will have viewers riveted long after the end credits roll.

All six episodes of "The Girlfriend" are available exclusively on Prime Video.
