"Diana" is the second series to debut from the Citadel universe and will be followed by "Citadel: Honey Bunny" set in India. In "Diana," after her parents are killed, Diana gets an offer to enact her revenge on the people who were responsible for the plane crash that killed her parents. Driven by a desire for revenge, she is trained by Citadel veteran Gabriele (Filippo Nigro) to infiltrate the syndicate. Just as Diana plans to disappear and leave the world of espionage behind, she receives unexpected help from Eduardo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio), heir to Manticore Italy and son of the ruthless Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi), who is playing his own power games against his German and French counterparts. As alliances shift and betrayals unfold, Diana must navigate a dangerous web of deceit, where trust is a rare and costly commodity.
The international thriller series is getting rave reviews for its cinematic action sequences, with special attention to De Angelis, who delivers the right amount of toughness and vulnerability needed to lead the action-packed series. While the response from the original was lukewarm, the franchise has corrected course with this series. "Diana" tells a cohesive narrative with breathtaking cinematography and production designs. Even though the spy plot has been done before, it works here as the stakes keep rising, as we see snippets of Diana's life with its non-linear timeline jumping back and forth between 2030 to 2022. "Diana" works great as a stand alone series, and thankfully, you do not need to watch the original to be caught up with the plot or the characters even though it's set in the timeline after the events of the original series. "Citadel: Diana" is a fantastic entry to the franchise, paving the way for its counterpart, "Citadel: Honey Bunny," set to debut next month.
