A New Friday Night Movie Ritual Begins August 21

Remember when Friday night movie plans didn’t involve scrolling through hundreds of titles trying to decide what to watch? Pluto TV is bringing back a little bit of that old school, movie night magic with Double Feature Fridays, a brand-new weekly experience launching Friday, August 21, in partnership with Entertainment Tonight. The free streaming service is turning Friday nights into a destination for movie lovers by pairing a familiar favorite with a fresh indie premiere, and adding a little Hollywood history along the way.

The concept is simple, but seriously fun: two movies, one connection, and plenty of stories from behind the scenes.

Each week, Entertainment Tonight correspondent Emily Curl will help introduce the evening with original segments built around the films and the stars who made them memorable. Drawing from Entertainment Tonight's extensive archive, viewers will get a peek at rare interviews, behind the scenes footage, on-set stories and career moments that offer a new perspective on movies audiences may already know and love. This isn't simply a double dose of movies. It’s an opportunity to revisit familiar films through the eyes of the people who made them while discovering something new immediately afterward.

From Hollywood Favorites to New Discoveries, Pluto TV is leaning into the massive library of entertainment available through Paramount's portfolio while also bringing in films from other major studios and distributors. The result is a lineup designed to connect generations of movie fans, and potentially introduce audiences to their next favorite film.

“We're building Pluto TV into a weekly movie night destination," said Will Gurman, SVP of Content Partnerships & Programming at Pluto TV. “Double Feature Fridays pairs a film people already love with one they're about to discover, then brings in Entertainment Tonight to host the whole night, turning movie night into a ritual our viewers won't want to miss.”

For Entertainment Tonight, the partnership offers another way to put its decades of Hollywood access to work. “The stories behind a movie can be just as memorable as the movie itself," said Emily Curl, Entertainment Tonight Correspondent. “Double Feature Fridays gives us the chance to bring those moments into the experience in a way that's fun and unexpected, adding a new perspective to familiar favorites while introducing audiences to something new.”

The archival component could become one of the format's biggest draws. Instead of simply pressing play, viewers can hear directly from stars about what it was actually like making the movie, from physically demanding performances to unexpected friendships and unforgettable production stories.

The inaugural pairing is Gravity and The Outer Threat, connecting two very different stories about people confronting forces far bigger than themselves.

The Oscar-nominated Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, gets an extra layer of context through Entertainment Tonight archival material exploring the demanding physical experience behind Bullock's performance and looking back at Clooney's involvement with the production. Then the night shifts from the vastness of space to a very different kind of threat with The Outer Threat, which makes its free streaming debut. The film stars Constance Wu as a retired astrophysicist whose peaceful family life begins to unravel after her partner makes a discovery with potentially enormous consequences.

It’s an intriguing way to launch the concept - one movie audiences already know, followed by a film that could be their newest discovery.

The first wave of Double Feature Fridays pairings promises plenty of variety, with everything from action and comedy to music, romance and holiday fare.

Upcoming pairings include:

  • Gravity + The Outer Threat

  • Django Unchained + Outlaw Posse

  • John Wick: Chapter 4 + Reckless

  • Friday + A Hip Hop Story

  • Pitch Perfect + 40 Dates and 40 Nights (2026)

  • The Notebook + What’s Love Got to Do With It (2022)

Fans can expect beloved titles from Paramount, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Radial Entertainment, and many more throughout the lineup alongside the new indie free streaming premieres. And if you're already thinking about what December is going to look like, Pluto TV has some seasonal favorites waiting in the wings, including Scrooged and Bad Santa 1 & 2 giving Double Feature Fridays plenty of room to evolve throughout the year while maintaining Friday night is movie night.

Double Feature Fridays premieres Friday, August 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Pluto TV Spotlight, with each weekly pairing also available through the Double Feature Fridays collection on demand.
