Adam Saunders' latest political satire, Re-election, was theatrically released in October and is now available on streaming platforms. This heartwarming comedy is filled with laugh-out-loud moments, but at its core, conveys a more profound message of personal responsibility, empathy, hope, and self-acceptance.
The film follows Jimmy Bauer (director-writer-producer Saunders), who is stuck in the past and whose stunning loss in the race for class president during his senior year back in 1995 caused him to drop out of high school. Now a 40-something underdog stuck working in a memorabilia store owned by his dad (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Tony Danza, TV’s “Taxi” and “Who’s the Boss?”), Jimmy decides to go back to school for his missing class credits — and win the election he’s sure will make his life right. But after 30 years, things have changed a bit, and with the help of his new Gen-Alpha friend Noa (Bex Taylor-Klaus, “The Killing”) and former classmate-turned-girlfriend Ama (Nathalie Kelley, “The Vampire Diaries”), Jimmy learns that it’s not how we start a journey that matters — it’s how we finish it with a few hard truhs in his quest for redemption.
Reel Perspectives sat down with Saunders, Taylor-Kalus, Guggeheim, and Whitley to discuss the uplifting film that provided so many genuine and heartfelt moments, and why it was important for us to receive the message of healing through comedy.
Speaking first with Saunders, who described the challenges of finding the right tonal balance for the film, Saunders acknowledged that it was easier than expected, as he did not have to worry about offending a specific individual while honoring his vision.
Bex, who beautifully portrays Noa, a nonbinary character, delivered a deeply moving performance, filled with emotional sensitivity and pathos, emphasized the importance of society embracing the various aspects of social identity. More importantly, Bex shone a light on the significance of self-love and respect in empowering individuals to be their true, authentic selves, ensuring they feel seen and heard.
Kim and Patty also expounded on the power of sisterhood, bringing their unique charm to the film and making it an absolute delight.
Re-election is a heartwarming and thoughtful film that is much needed in today's politically charged climate. With outstanding performances from its ensemble cast, the film delivers meaningful portrayals of diverse characters and a powerful message of authentic representation that will resonate with viewers. It gently encourages us to embrace life without regrets and to be kind to one another, highlighting the true path to happiness.
Re-election is available to stream on Apple TV and Prime Video, and available to buy or rent on digital streaming platforms.
