Another team beating the legendary "Dream Team," the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team? Blasemphy! The Dream Team was undefeated and considered the best Basketball team ever assembled, beating their opponents by 44 points, and whose players consisted of iconic Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing... all future Hall of Famers. But that's precisely what happened when the new HBO documentary "We Beat the Dream Team," which premiered on Monday, February 17, revealed. USA Basketball tasked a group of talented college basketball players called the "Select Team" to prepare the Dream Team for their Olympic debut in 1992 for the Barcelona Games. Those college basketball players who were relatively unknown were recruited in a scrimmage to help The Dream Team that just so happened to include Grant Hill, Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Bobby Hurley, Allan Houston, Penny Hardaway, and Jamal Mashburn, who would all become future superstars of the game.
The new shocking documentary, created by TNT Sports and HBO Sports Documentaries and directed by Michael Tolajian, is executive produced by Craig Barry and Bentley Weiner. With the help of an exclusive VHS tape, the never-before-seen game reveals the shocking win and the attempt to keep the win long buried with the help of Chuck Daly, the coach of the Olympic team. Even though the Dream Team got to return the favor and kicked their butts the next day in another round of scrimmage, it doesn't matter. A team of youngsters beat The Dream team, and decades later, we're only now hearing about it.
With Grant Hil narrating the documentary with featured commentary from past players, including Charles Barkley, the fascinating documentary takes us behind the scenes, and viewers get a first-hand account of what it was like for these up and coming stars who were given the opportunity to compete against their heroes and win.
We Beat the Dream Team is currently streaming on HBO/MAX.
