Every once in a while, a film comes along that surprises viewers by blending familiar genres into something that feels fresh, intense, and genuinely entertaining. War Machine is one of those films. If you're scrolling through Netflix looking for something that actually gets your adrenaline going, War Machine is exactly what you're looking for. The film delivers a high octane mix of military action, sci-fi suspense, and survival drama that will keep you hooked from the opening scenes to the explosive finale.

The new film stars Alan Ritchson, best known as Prime Video's "Reacher," as a combat engineer and U.S. Army soldier "81," who, along with other soldiers, undergoes an intense training exercise in the wilderness to become a U.S. Army Ranger. What starts as a routine training exercise quickly spirals into chaos when the soldiers encounter a massive alien war machine that crash-lands on Earth. Very quickly the exercise becomes a desperate fight for survival as it starts killing everyone in its path. With limited resources, the soldiers must band together to stay alive and find a way to destroy the machine while being hunted. The film also stars Dennis Quaid, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales in supporting roles.

War Machine quickly jumped to number 1 on Netflix with 39.3 million viewers tuning in within the first 3 days, and it's easy to see why. Alan Ritchson has undeniable star power. It's not just his imposing physical presence, Ritchson has the kind of screen presence that immediately commands attention. He convincingly portrays a soldier leading a group of Ranger trainees who are suddenly forced into a life-or-death battle against a giant alien killing machine.

Ritchson quietly delivers a subtle performance in the emotional scenes that does not rely on long speeches or dramatic monologues. It's those quieter scenes that come through in small moments with determined expressions and controlled reactions, as viewers are reminded why he so desperately wants to become an Army Ranger to honor his brother, who was first seen at the beginning of the film.

Visually, War Machine delivers the kind of scale viewers expect from a sci-fi action movie directed by Patrick Hughes. The towering alien machine is both intimidating and fascinating to watch, creating a relentless threat that stalks the soldiers throughout the story.  It works not just because of its sci-fi or explosive action scenes, as seen in similar films like Predator, Battlefield Earth, and even Edge of Tomorrow, but because the film has genuine heart. When 81 repeatedly risks his life to save his teammate 7 (Stephan James) and bring him back to base, it's the type of honor and integrity that elevate the character and the film through courage, loyalty, and leadership.

By the end of the film, we're rooting for 81 to earn his Army Ranger designation. War Machine stands out as a thrilling ride that combines heart-pounding action with a compelling story. Just when we think the characters have survived the worst of the conflict, the ending reveals a much larger threat looming over the world, setting the stage for a very much anticipated sequel.

War Machine is streaming now on Netflix.
