In the first 4 seasons, Ruth kidnaps her daughter, Callie, to be indoctrinated into the religious cult of sexual deviance. After helping to enact punishment on her best friend Tally (Yvonne Senat Jones), she is initiated into a high-ranking position in the cult known as an "Elder" by sexual assault. After the initiation, Ruth plans her escape along with Tally to escape the clutches of the cult and their sexually sadistic leader, "The Highest" (Matt Cedeño). It is later revealed that Ruth was having a secret affair with Dikhan (Lenny Thomas), The Highest's right hand and also second in command of the cult, who was also having a sexual relationship with The Highest. The cult is infiltrated by an undercover FBI agent, Andrew (Blue Kimble), planted to take down the cult; however, things get complicated when he falls in love with Tally, and she becomes pregnant with his baby. Tally is unaware that he's an FBI agent and is also married. Furthering the drama, it is revealed that Andrew was one of the men who took part in the sexual assault against Ruth for her initiation orientation while also revealing he had sex with The Highest.

According to the season 5 official synopsis, The Highest is ready to lead the members of his cult to the Raku, but Ruth intervenes. Ruth's intervention begins a slow turn in power that will likely end with the succession of her overall plan. Because Ruth is carrying The Highest's seed, she is able to use the pregnancy as a tool to manipulate obstacles that arise around her. With the infiltration of the FBI, the compound is once again in a state of unrest as they prepare for a huge blood oath wedding. Chaos ensues, and order is disrupted. Members are up in arms and some are turning on one another, different agendas are being revealed furthering the gap. It forces The Highest to call for a lockdown to reunite himself and everyone else with the Raku. The people of the Raku are in for far more of a surprise than they could have imagined.
