What happens when love, control and manipulation become impossible to separate?
Tyler Perry Studios is opening the door to a new kind of drama, and its first film from the newly launched Maxscene division is already turning heads. Conditioned, the upcoming psychological thriller hails from writer-director Courtney Glaudé.
The film stars Crystal Renee Hayslett, best known to audiences as Fatima Wilson Taylor on Tyler Perry’s Sistas and Zatima, in what marks her first leading role in a feature film. Hayslett steps into the role of Nyla Belle. To the world, Nyla Belle’s marriage appears perfect, "but as the steady patterns of control tighten around her, she’s pushed into a Stockholm-like bond–one that builds toward a breaking point that she never saw coming".
For Hayslett, the project represents an exciting transition from television favorite to feature-film leading woman. Glaudé reportedly became interested in casting her after seeing a particularly powerful performance on Sistas, recognizing the dramatic weight she could bring to a role.
Behind the camera, Conditioned represents an equally important moment for Glaudé. The filmmaker, who has worked extensively within Perry's television universe on Sistas, Zatima and Ruthless, is now stepping into the feature film spotlight as the writer and director of Maxscene's inaugural project. His previous feature directorial work includes The Reading, while his short-film work has earned recognition on the festival circuit.
Tyler Perry Studios recently launched the specialty division as a home for filmmakers with distinctive voices, with the goal of giving creators greater opportunities to develop and bring their projects to audiences theatrically. Conditioned is the first film to emerge from that initiative, signaling Perry's willingness to create another lane for filmmakers to tell stories outside the familiar studio formula.
Conditioned is currently expected to arrive in theaters in early 2027.
