Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black Season 3 Review: Drama, Betrayal, Twists & 3 A.M. Binge-Watching

If you thought Beauty in Black couldn't possibly get any messier, Tyler Perry clearly heard you and decided to prove us wrong. Netflix's addictive drama is back for Season 3, and once again, Kimmie, Mallory, Rain and the rest of our favorite troublemakers are knee-deep in secrets, betrayal, family drama, murder, money and enough shocking twists to make “just one episode” a complete lie. This is the kind of show you turn on casually and somehow find yourself still watching at 3 a.m. because you absolutely need to know what happens next.

At the center of all this madness is Kimmie, played by Taylor Polidore Williams, and watching her evolution has been one of the most entertaining parts of the series. When we first met Kimmie, she was simply trying to find a way out of a difficult situation and build a better life for herself. Now, she's married to Horace and much more deeply connected to the Bellarie family and its empire. Kimmie has discovered that having power can be just as complicated as being powerless, especially when you're surrounded by people who have spent years lying, manipulating and destroying anyone who gets in their way.

Season 3 picks up after the chaos of the previous season, with Kimmie and Mallory having formed an uneasy alliance against the Bellaries. Roy, Olivia and Jules are facing the consequences of their actions, while Norman manages to use his connections to avoid prison. Naturally, that doesn't mean the Bellarie drama is anywhere close to being over. If anything, everyone is now more desperate than ever to protect their secrets and regain control, and desperation is never a good look on these people.

Mallory continues to be one of the show's most fascinating characters because she is always thinking several moves ahead. Crystle Stewart brings plenty of confidence and complexity to the character as Mallory tries to maintain control while everything around her begins falling apart. Her relationship with Kimmie is particularly interesting because there is clearly a level of mutual respect between them, but neither woman is naïve enough to completely trust the other. Their partnership works because they need each other, but in the world of Beauty in Black, alliances can disappear the moment they stop being useful.

Then there's Norman, whose increasingly bitter relationship with his brother Horace finally reaches a dangerous breaking point. Norman's resentment has been simmering for years, and Season 3 finally lets that family feud explode. In one of the season's biggest confrontations, Norman breaks into Mallory's home and is shot by Mallory. Horace arrives during the chaos, only for Norman to shoot him before collapsing. It's the kind of completely unhinged family confrontation that somehow feels right at home in Beauty in Black, where nobody seems capable of having a normal disagreement without someone ending up in serious danger.

Jules is dealing with his own demons as he becomes consumed by revenge following the death of his son Glen. His grief sends him down an increasingly dangerous path, and after escaping custody, he becomes determined to find the people responsible. His search eventually leads him to Sylvie, and when she reveals what happened to Glen, Jules responds violently and shoots her. His storyline adds another layer of suspense because he's no longer simply reacting to the chaos around him; he's actively creating more of it.

Rain, meanwhile, is finally trying to take control of her own life. After taking over the club that once exploited her, she has an opportunity to turn the tables and create something for herself. Unfortunately, escaping one dangerous situation doesn't mean she gets to live peacefully. The arrival of Gina, played by Jasmine Burke, introduces another complicated dynamic, and Rain quickly finds herself navigating new threats and questionable alliances. Her journey remains one of the more compelling parts of the series because she is constantly trying to figure out how to survive without becoming the very kind of person she has spent so much time fighting.

Season 3 also gives us a more emotional storyline through Charles and Varney. Charles begins spiraling under the pressure of his personal problems, financial consequences and unresolved trauma, eventually reaching a heartbreaking breaking point. When Charles attempts to take his own life, Varney discovers him and intervenes, ultimately encouraging him to seek professional help. It's a surprisingly vulnerable moment for a series that spends so much time embracing outrageous drama, and it gives the season some emotional weight beyond all the scandals and betrayals.

But because this is Beauty in Black, there was never a chance that the season finale would simply wrap everything up neatly. Instead, Make It Rain becomes the site of a deadly attack after Jules joins forces with Gina's criminal operation. Gunmen storm the club, sending everyone scrambling for their lives, and Kimmie and Mallory are caught in the middle of the shooting. Their fate is left uncertain, giving viewers exactly the kind of cliffhanger that makes you immediately start wondering when the next season is coming.

That ability to keep the story moving is what makes Beauty in Black such an entertaining series. There is always something happening, whether it's another family conflict, a secret being exposed, a relationship falling apart or a character making a decision that is guaranteed to create even more trouble. The show doesn't sit around waiting for the drama to happen; it constantly throws its characters into new situations and lets the consequences pile up.

And that's precisely why the series is so much fun to watch. Beauty in Black knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. It's stylish, dramatic, suspenseful and unapologetically messy, with characters who are complicated enough to keep us invested even when they're making absolutely terrible decisions. You may yell at the television, question everyone's judgment and wonder why nobody in this family knows how to keep a secret, but you're still going to press “next episode.”

Tyler Perry has once again figured out how to create the kind of television that keeps you hooked. Season 3 is filled with family dysfunction, ambition, revenge, romance, betrayal and enough salacious twists to keep you guessing. The pacing makes it ridiculously easy to binge, and the salacious twists creates the need to see what happens next.

For fans who have been riding with Kimmie and the rest of this beautifully dysfunctional crew, Season 3 delivers exactly what we've come to expect while pushing the drama even further. It's the kind of guilty pleasure that doesn't require an apology because sometimes television is supposed to be fun, outrageous and completely addictive.
