Global superstar and multi-platinum artist Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name "The Weekend" is on a roll. Coming off the success of his sixth studio album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, the singer follows that success with his feature debut in the psychological thriller of the same name, both serving as a companion piece to his album, which was released in January. Hurry Up Tomorrow was released in theaters on May 16.

The Lionsgate film, written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, stars The Weekend, who also co-wrote the movie alongside Reza Fahim. In the film, he plays a fictionalized version of himself plagued by insomnia who gets pulled into an odyssey with a stranger and begins to unravel the very core of his existence.

The film also stars Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan, Riley Keough, Gabby Barrett, and Charli D'Amelio.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tesfaye describes the process of making the movie as both introspective and cathartic, recalling when he lost his voice during a performance at his concert in 2022, coming to the realization that the problem was mental. "From writing to production and through post — I realized just how much of a catalyst this art form can be for conversations about our emotions, mental health, and vulnerabilities."

Shults also expressed the importance of delving deeper into who Tesfaye is, stating, "I feel like we created a character that isn't exactly him, but it's honest to his soul and what he could have been if things went differently in life. I think his character is in need of self-reflection. He's kind of at a crossroads in his life."

With mental health at the forefront, you don't want to miss The Weekend's feature length debut, tackling tough subject matters of self destruction, trauma, and abuse mixed with good ole' fashion thriller elements.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is now playing in theaters.
