The sixth and final season of Hulu's multi-award winning series premiered on April 8 with three of its ten episodes, and already the premiere has social media buzzing after a torturous almost three-year wait. Based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name, the series will release weekly episodes on Tuesdays through its series finale on Tuesday, May 27.
The dystopian drama led by the fantastic Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne has been a monster hit since its initial release in 2017, and fans have been eagerly anticipating June's revenge on Gilead. Even though this is the final chapter of the series, fans can take comfort in the fact that a spinoff based on another one of Margaret Atwood's novels, "The Testaments," is in the works, and characters from the original series will appear in the spinoff.
Created by Bruce Miller and produced by MGM Television, the series follows a religiously authoritarian society where women are compelled to bear children due to low fertility rates and the oppressive laws of the Republic of Gilead strip away their basic rights. Women assigned to the ruling class to bear children are called Handmaids. Moss' June Osborne is forced to become a Handmaid and is separated from her husband, Luke, and her daughter, Hannah. Throughout the series, we witness her transformative journey as she faces numerous obstacles and humiliations to be reunited with her family. Season 5 left us on a sizzling cliffhanger with June on a refugee train with daughter Nichole and her nemesis Serena, with her own baby heading west. Commander Fred Waterford is dead, Luke was arrested, Lawrence and Naomi Putnam got married and the idea of New Bethlehem is upon us. Oh, joy!
The series cast includes Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, Ann Dowd, O.T. Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine and Josh Charles.
In the final season, June's unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead. Luke and Moira join the resistance. Serena tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia reckon with what they have wrought, and Nick faces challenging tests of character. This final chapter of June's journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.
