If you missed A24's underrated Opus in its theatrical debut earlier this year, the film starring multi-award winning actress Ayo Edebiri (best known for The Bear) is now streaming on HBO MAX. The film follows a young writer who is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago. Surrounded by the star's cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.

Written and directed by Mark Anthony Green in his feature directorial debut, the film was first released in March 2025, following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. In addition to Edebiri, the film features a star studded cast that includes a fantastic John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tatanka Means.

Opus adopts a satirical and horror approach, critiquing celebrity stardom and the adoration of fans in a culture where access to celebrities and the carefully crafted public personas they curate for the public remains at a fever pitch. The film highlights the delicate balance between perception and reality.

Mysterious, funny, engaging, creepy, and intriguing, led by the star power of Edebiri and Malkovich, Opus shines in its exploration of celebrity culture and is definitely worth checking out.
