The highly anticipated Max Original comedy Stuart Fails to Save the Universe officially premieres Thursday, July 23, launching the first major The Big Bang Theory sequel series built around an original character from the flagship sitcom. New episodes will debut weekly every Thursday, with the 10-episode first season concluding on September 24.
After the success of prequels Young Sheldon and George & Mandy's First Marriage, Warner Bros. Television is expanding The Big Bang Theory universe in a completely different direction and it's one filled with alternate realities, sci-fi chaos, and the lovable dysfunction fans have adored for nearly two decades.
The series follows comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) after he accidentally breaks a device created by Sheldon and Leonard, unleashing a catastrophic multiverse event that threatens reality itself. Suddenly the once-unlucky comic shop owner becomes humanity's unlikely last hope. Helping, or perhaps complicating, the mission are Stuart's girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), dependable geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and the brilliantly obnoxious quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Together, the mismatched team races across alternate dimensions where familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory appear in wildly unexpected ways. And if the show's title is any indication, fans shouldn't expect everything to go according to plan.
Stuart first appeared during Season 2 of The Big Bang Theory, debuting in Episode 20 as the quirky owner of the Pasadena comic book store frequented by Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, Raj, and the gang. What started as a memorable guest appearance quickly evolved from an unlucky businessman struggling to keep his store afloat into a beloved member of the show's extended family, eventually becoming a series regular through the show's twelfth and final season. Now after years of serving as comic relief, Stuart finally gets the leading role many fans have quietly hoped for.
Whether Stuart succeeds - or spectacularly fails - one thing for certain is that fans are in for one hilariously chaotic ride when the series premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
