The controversial Showtime series "Gigolos" became a household name in the mid-2000s, featuring male escorts working in Las Vegas and showcasing their larger than life personalities. However, the series faced a dark turn when one of its cast members, Akshaya Kubiak, better known as Ash Arman, murdered a client several years after the show ended. This shocking murder left fans questioning whether the series contributed to the blurring of lines between reality television and crime.
The new fascinating three-part documentary "Sin City Gigolo: A Murder in Las Vegas," which premiered exclusively on Paramount+ on March 4, explores the origins of the show's success, the dynamics of Las Vegas, the sex work industry, reality TV, stardom, and the murder investigation.
"Gigolos" ran for six seasons on Showtime from 2011 to 2016 when one of the breakout stars, Arman, became an overnight sensation. In 2020, the bright lights of Sin City dimmed when responders responded to his 911 call and found 29-year-old Herleen Dulai bludgeoned to death. Directed by Barbara Shearer and co-produced by See It Now Studios and Pyramid Productions, Jay Blumenfield and Tony Marsh, the official synopsis reveals "as the gruesome details emerge, questions quickly arise about the identity of the victim, the Las Vegas Police Department's handling of the investigation, and how the sequence of events surrounding the death unfolded. What possessed a former reality TV star, who preached a mantra of love and light, to carry out such a brutal crime? Former GIGOLOS cast members, friends, family, and law enforcement weigh in on this tragic case. Was the price of fame just too much to deal with?"
Arman has maintained he has no recollection of the murder but pleaded guilty, serving an 8-20 year sentence. The riveting documentary gives viewers an inside look documenting the crime with interviews from past cast members while weaving together revealing scenes and footage from the Gigolo reality series.
The series, distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution, is now streaming on Paramount+.
