Originally established as Black Music Month in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, the month long celebration recognizes the immeasurable impact Black musicians have had on American culture and global entertainment. From jazz, blues, gospel, and soul to rock and roll, hip-hop, R&B, and pop, Black artists have consistently pioneered new genres, challenged creative boundaries, and used music as a powerful platform for storytelling, identity, resistance, and social change.


More than four decades later, the celebration serves as both a tribute to the icons who paved the way and a reminder of the lasting influence Black artists continue to have across every corner of the entertainment industry. It also creates space to preserve musical history, amplify Black voices, and educate new generations about the originators behind many of the sounds and styles that shape today’s global music landscape.


At a time when conversations surrounding representation, cultural recognition, and artistic ownership remain important, Black Music Month continues to spotlight the enduring impact of Black creativity while honoring the resilience, innovation, and excellence that have long defined Black artistry.
