Netflix’s Umthetho Is the South African Crime Thriller That Will Have You Questioning Who You Can Trust

Netflix’s newest South African drama, Umthetho, jumps straight into the impossible choice of choosing between doing what’s right and protecting the people you love.
Premiering today on Netflix, the seven-episode thriller follows Mbali, an idealistic young public prosecutor whose commitment to justice is put to the ultimate test when her family becomes tangled up with a dangerous prison syndicate.
Mbali has built her life around the law. She believes in justice, believes in doing the right thing and, most importantly, believes she knows exactly where she stands. Her brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is at the center of a powerful prison syndicate, dragging Mbali into a world that exists on the opposite side of everything she has spent her career defending. Nqobile Nunu Khumalo takes on the role of Mbali, with Given Stuurman playing her younger brother, Sphelele. Suddenly, Mbali isn't simply investigating criminals from across a courtroom. She's getting dangerously close to them. The closer she gets, the harder it becomes to separate her professional responsibilities from her responsibilities as a sister.
The intriguing series places Mbali in an increasingly dangerous position as she becomes connected to her brother's criminal operation while trying to protect her younger brother and maintain her identity as someone who is supposed to uphold the law. Playing both sides of a game where getting caught could cost her everything, Umthetho hooks viewers in a deadly game of survival.
Umthetho is adapted from the Brazilian Netflix crime drama Brotherhood (Irmandade), but this version brings the story into a distinctly South African setting and surrounds it with a new cast and cultural perspective. Rather than simply copying the Brazilian series, Umthetho gives Netflix another opportunity to spotlight South African talent while exploring themes of family loyalty, corruption, justice, and survival.
The ensemble cast also includes Sindi Dlathu, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, SK Khoza, Molefi Monaisa, Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi, Mandla Gaduka and Herald Khumalo, giving the series a deep bench of South African talent.
Netflix has continued expanding its South African slate, and Umthetho arrives with a premise that should feel instantly familiar to fans of gritty international crime dramas while still offering something culturally distinct. The seven episodes are available to stream now, making this one of those series that could very easily turn into a “just one more episode” situation.
With titles like “Ruthless Mercy,” “I Got You,” “Rat Trap,” “One Way Ticket,” “The Tunnel,” “Decisions” and “Blood On Your Hands,” the episode lineup alone suggests that things are about to get incredibly messy, plunging viewers into a world where family loyalty and the law collide.
