Namit Malhotra's ambitious cinematic adaptation of Ramayana promises to bring one of the greatest tales ever told to life on the big screen. Featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the iconic role of Rama, the two-part franchise showcases cutting edge technology and a global creative vision, positioning itself as a landmark moment in international filmmaking. The Ramayana is revered across cultures with over 300 versions worldwide, will be retold with a focus on its emotionally driven narrative.
The powerhouse producer behind Prime Focus Studios is diving headfirst into Ramayana, a sweeping cinematic adaptation of the ancient Indian epic. The film promises to not be just another mythological retelling, this is a full scale, emotionally driven spectacle designed to rival Hollywood's biggest franchises.
The legendary text follows Prince Rama's (Ranbir Kapoor) journey of exile, love, and war. At its heart is a deeply human story: a man on a mission to rescue his wife, Sita, from the powerful demon king Ravana, while navigating duty, sacrifice, and destiny.

The official synopsis reveals that since the beginning of time, the Trinity Gods rule the three worlds: Brahma, the god who creates; Vishnu, the god who protects; and Shiva, the god who transforms. As the realms of heaven, earth edge toward chaos, the Trinity god Vishnu descends to earth in an avatar to restore balance. This time, Vishnu is reborn as RAMA (Ranbir Kapoor), a human prince destined to restore balance. Opposing him, stands the most formidable, learned, undefeatable and immortal demon king RAVANA (Yash), blessed by the Trinity themselves, driven by pride and a vengeance powerful enough to shatter the cosmos.
Unaware of his true purpose as the only opponent destined to stand up to Ravana in a fateful cosmic design, Rama is the idol of Dharma (duty above all) and the most loved crown prince of Ayodhya, the greatest human dynasty of the time. Rama tries to build a life of quiet honor with his beloved wife Sita (Sai Pallavi) and loyal brother Lakshman (Ravie Dubey) amongst others, until a twist of fate drives him into exile and toward an inevitable clash with Ravana in a reckoning so cataclysmic, it will decide the destiny of gods and mortals.
In addition to Kapoor, the film boasts a talented cast, including Sai Pallavi (Sita), Sunny Deol (Monkey God Hanuman), Ravie Dubey (Lakshamana) and superstar Yash(Ravana).
Developed under Malhotra's banner, Prime Focus Studios, in collaboration with the Oscar-winning VFX powerhouse DNEG, known for their special effects in films Dune and Tenet, Ramayana aims to blend storytelling with groundbreaking, innovative visuals, poised to rival the scale of global franchises, while staying rooted in the emotional and spiritual core of the original epic.
When speaking about his character Rama during a press release, Kapoor shared, “I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare; and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience.”
The trailer hints at breathtaking landscapes, epic battles, and characters brought to life with realism. Beyond the spectacle, what makes the film so exciting is its global ambition. Malhotra's Ramayana could be the film that bridges cultures, bringing an ancient Indian narrative into mainstream global conversation.
Ramayana Part 1 premieres worldwide on Diwali 2026, with Part 2 debuting on Diwali 2027.
