Megan Pete was hurting and no one cared. Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words offers unprecedented access to the multifaceted woman behind the persona. The riveting documentary premiered on October 31 and chronicles the mega star's rise to fame and the immense heartbreak she experienced along the way.
Megan Pete, professionally known by her stage name "Megan Thee Stallion," is arguably one of the most popular and influential rappers of our generation, and yet, few people know the real Megan. The multi-talented singer and songwriter hailed from Houston chronicles her road to stardom as she tenaciously navigates fame, grief, pressure, and success. The documentary unpacks Megan's most vulnerable moments, from her rise as an MC-free style rapper to her provocative videos managed by her mother, Holly Pete, who passed away in 2019. The documentary reveals the close relationship she had with her mother, who was not only her parent but her best friend and inspiration, and how devastating the loss was for her.
The documentary reveals the heartbreaking decision that was forced upon Megan to end life support and the whirlwind emotions that resulted in a life of immediate drinking and partying in the aftermath to cope with her mother's death.

Directed by Nneka Onuorah, the film is a frank, harrowing exploration of Megan's emotional distress. The documentary touches on so many aspects of her life, but at its core is the trauma she faced when fans and social media attacked her when she was shot in the foot by Canadian rapper Tory Lanez in 2020, sparking a media frenzy that shredded her credibility, with mounting accusations leveled against her in deep seeded misogynoir from prominent men in the entertainment industry. Instead of coming to her defense, they supported Lanez, causing Megan to have an emotional breakdown, which resulted in her canceling her tours as she sought therapy for the abandonment she felt. We feel the anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation she relays in the documentary.
Interestingly enough, the documentary highlights the prominent men in the industry who sided with Lanez but had their own checkered past with women and sexual abuse. The documentary exposes the negative side of the entertainment industry as Megan's feelings of abandonment intensify as those closest to her choose to ignore her desperate cries for help. Megan's heartbreak and vulnerability are seen for the first time as she opens up about Lanez's guilty verdict on three felony counts.
Admitting that she lied to Gayle King in the 2022 CBS Mornings interview in which King asked if she had a sexual relationship with Lanez, Megan confesses her reasons for not telling the truth.
The production values are amazing as the personal documentary is interspersed with anime, personalizing the journey that is uniquely hers. Megan is courageous, resilient, and in the depths of despair, shows her resilience to rise above and become even stronger through a path of self-discovery and healing.
