Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Mason Thames, Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun and Peter Dinklage star in Macon Blair’s wildly chaotic new comedy, now playing in theaters.
If your idea of a relaxing road trip involves two wildly unqualified men, a wealthy teenager who absolutely does not want to go to rehab, questionable decisions, drugs, crime and enough chaos to derail the entire journey, then Idiots may be exactly the comedy you've been waiting for. Macon Blair's outrageous new slapstick comedy is now playing in theaters, delivering a gloriously messy ride fueled by bad judgment, escalating disasters and a cast clearly having a blast with every ridiculous turn.
Idiots follows Mark and Davis, two down on their luck guys who land what appears to be a simple job: transport a wealthy, troubled teenager to rehab. Of course, nothing about this particular assignment is simple. Once their young passenger Sheridan gets involved, what should have been an ordinary drive quickly transforms into an unpredictable collision of danger, absurdity and spectacularly poor decision making.
The film follows Franco and Jackson Jr., whose mismatched personalities give the film its comedic spark. Their characters may be completely ill-equipped for the job, but watching them attempt to maintain control as everything around them falls apart is where Idiots finds much of its funniest material. Mason Thames adds another layer of trouble as Sheridan, the kind of passenger who can turn a bad situation into an outright catastrophe without breaking a sweat.
The supporting cast is a comedy dream team. Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun and Peter Dinklage each bring their own eccentric energy to Blair's increasingly unhinged world, helping turn the film into a parade of unpredictable characters and outrageous encounters.
Written and directed by Macon Blair, Idiots embraces the kind of unapologetically ridiculous comedy where one terrible decision inevitably leads to another and somehow things keep getting worse. The result is a scrappy, irreverent road movie packed with physical comedy, offbeat characters and escalating mayhem that begs to be experienced with an audience.
With Franco, Jackson Jr., Thames, Shipka, Braun and Dinklage all throwing themselves into the madness, Idiots is less a road trip and more a comedic disaster waiting to happen. And that's exactly why you should buckle up.
