"Hotel Cocaine" brings the drama on MGM+

"Hotel Cocaine" is the latest crime thriller from MGM+. Premiered on June 16, 2024, the series is set in the 1970s and revolves around the burgeoning Miami drug trade. The eight-episode series follows the story of Roman Compte, a Cuban exile and CIA operative, who manages The Mutiny Hotel, the epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene in the late 1970s and early '80s.

Created and executive produced by Chris Brancato (known for "Godfather of Harlem" and "Narcos"), the series was also executive produced and pilot-directed by Guillermo Navarro (known for Pan's Labyrinth). The series is produced by MGM+ Studios and distributed internationally by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Stan in Australia.

"Hotel Cocaine" tells the story of Roman Compte (Danny Pino), a Cuban exile who is the general manager of the Mutiny Hotel. The hotel becomes a major center for Miami's cocaine drug trade, attracting a diverse clientele, including elite businessmen, politicians, socialites, celebrities, CIA, and FBI agents. Caught in the middle is Compte, who is trying to maintain the operation and chase his version of the American Dream. His relationships with his brother Nestor Cabal (Yul Vazquez) and his daughter Valeria (Corina Bradley) drive the story forward.

Hotel Cocaine boasts an impressive cast, including the talented Danny Pino, Michael Chiklis, Mark Feuerstein, and Yul Vazquez. With recurring guest stars such as Mayra Hermosillo, Juan Pablo Raba, Don Mike, Pedro Giunti, Lola Claire, Matthew Del Negro, Victor Oliveira, Robert Beck, Sam Robards, and Candy Santana.

In each episode, tensions rise as characters and factions compete for dominance in Miami's dangerous drug trade, blurring the lines of law enforcement, moral integrity, and family bonds. The first episode immediately sets the tone as Compte is forced to work with DEA agent Dominic Zulio (Michael Chiklis) when he blackmails Compte into reconnecting with his drug kingpin brother, Nestor Cabal (Yul Vazquez), to protect his daughter, Valeria (Corina Bradley). To conceal his true identity and prove his loyalty to his brother, Compte reluctantly becomes more deeply entrenched in the drug world. The stakes heighten when Valeria is kidnapped, leading to devastating consequences and continuous shifts in power dynamics as alliances are formed.

When Compte is confronted with a photograph of a loved one he believed to be dead, the suspense of Compte's decision leaves us on the edge, paving the way for a compelling season 2.

"Hotel Cocaine" has one of the best ensemble casts in serial dramas. Although the plot may not be groundbreaking, it stands out for its powerful acting and dedication to the story, elevating the series to must-see television.
