Harlem Ice introduces us to the transformative 5 part documentary that follows several African American girls of Figure Skating in Harlem as they prepare for competitions, performances, and a life-changing global experience. The new documentary premiered exclusively on Disney+ on February 12 with all 5 episodes.
There is so much to love about Harlem Ice. The Real Perspectives were delighted to screen the episodes ahead of its premiere, and you cannot help but cheer and root for these young women to succeed. Through their eyes, we experience the highs and lows of the FSH (Figure Skating in Harlem) Season, which runs from October to April and combines figure skating with education, fitness, and life skills for young girls between the ages of six and eighteen. The nonprofit organization, which offers a variety of programs for underprivileged girls, gives these young athletes the confidence they need to be leaders in ice skating and become academic achievers. Their unique experiences help them to break the ice ceiling and gain access to a global stage.
With strength, determination, and perseverance through their personal and professional struggles, the series follows the close friendships between the girls and their coaches as they help them achieve their very best in a sport that, while it is an Olympic staple, is not a sport that is typically synonymous with African Americans.

Directed by Samantha Knowles with executive producers that include heavy hitters Good Morning America's Robin Roberts, Ron Howard, and Brian Grazer, the series stars Tori Prentice, Ashley Prentice, Adrianna Walker, Ariyana Peal, Ila Epperson, Katie Thordarson, and Vashti Lonsdale.
Harlem Ice is a wonderful documentary that shines a light on the FSH program, which has given these women the tools they need to succeed in life. With their whole lives ahead of them, these beautiful, talented young girls take the tools given, and we watch them blossom to become pilots in their own lives with a transformative journey that propels them to be trailblazers. The series celebrates the lives of these powerful young girls, and whether they realize it or not, they inspire many young girls in the Harlem community and around the world.
