Daughters, the latest documentary from Netflix, poignantly chronicles the emotional journey of four girls (Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja'Ana) as they prepare to reunite with their fathers through a special dance at a Washington, DC, jail. This moving documentary, which premiers on Netflix on August 14th, powerfully showcases the healing power of love.
The critically acclaimed documentary Daughters premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it was honored with two awards: Festival Favorite and Audience Choice: U.S. Documentary Competition. Co-directed by Angela Patton and Natalie Rae, the documentary raises awareness dealing with visitation limitations and the diminishing intimacy daughters have with their fathers who are incarcerated.
Daughters was granted access to incarcerated fathers participating in the intensive therapy of the "Date With Dad" program in Washington, D.C. This unique program, which consists of 12 weeks, provides the crucial opportunity for children to maintain their familial bonds with their incarcerated fathers.

With strong visual presentation, discussions, and insightful conversations, filmmakers Natalie Rae and Angela Patton (who is the CEO of "Girls for a Change" (a nonprofit that focuses on empowering and uplifting Black girls and Daughters through "Date with Dad" — a program that strengthens the bond between fathers and daughters separated by incarceration) shine a spotlight on men - fathers - who take part in the program and participate in the therapy sessions leading up to the special dance, for which the men wear formal attire to reunite with their daughters.

It is worth noting that we never find out why these men are in prison, as some are even sentenced to 30 years. The documentary focuses on the connections between fathers and daughters who are separated by incarceration and the challenges both sides face while strengthening the relationships between fathers and daughters and other essential life skills for successful reintegration into communities after incarceration.

Daughters is a powerful and thought-provoking documentary highlighting social issues, family dynamics, and the human experience.
