Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington Turn a Family Nightmare Into a Race Against Time in Netflix’s Gripping New Thriller Animals

Ben Affleck is back in the director’s chair, and this time he’s stepping in front of the camera too for the new film Animals. He stars alongside Kerry Washington in a tense kidnapping thriller that turns a family crisis into an absolute nightmare.
Animals follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife after their son is kidnapped. Suddenly the political campaign, the money, the image, and the carefully controlled life they've built don't mean much anymore. Their only priority is getting their son home, but raising the ransom will force them into some very uncomfortable territory, and that's where things get interesting.
The teaser doesn't give away much, and that's probably the smartest thing Netflix could have done. Instead of explaining everything, it throws us into this unsettling world where something is clearly very wrong. There are flashes of fear, desperation and violence, but the trailer leaves plenty of questions hanging in the air.
Washington looks especially intriguing here. We've seen her play powerful, complicated characters before, but there's something different about watching her as a mother caught in a situation where she's running out of options.
The newly released teaser uses little to no dialogue, letting the visuals create the tension that makes the whole thing feel even more disturbing.
In addition to Affleck and Washington, Animals features Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Matt Gerald. That's a pretty stacked lineup for a thriller, and it immediately makes you wonder how many layers this story is going to have.
The teaser makes it clear that money, politics and reputation are all going to collide with desperation. And when you put those things together, somebody is bound to make a decision they cannot take back.
Animals arrives in select theaters and on Netflix on October 9, 2026.
